Development of a Community Garden

Volunteers from Dukes Meadows Trust initially took part in a garden design class run by Hounslow adult education services and this was the starting point for development of a Community Garden. The garden, situated next to the DMCA hall on Alexandra Gardens, offers the local community a tranquil, colourful garden and a pond currently full of tadpoles!

Replacement of orchard trees

A team of twelve from Bovis Lend Lease planted 16 trees in the Orchard at Dukes Meadows in a project organized by local charity Dukes Meadows Trust. A selection of apples, pears, cherries and one Mulberry were added to those sponsored by Kraft Foods and planted in 2004. After two years of severe drought in 2005/6 some trees had been lost and the Trust was keen to fill the gaps.

Promenade Approach Road

Five volunteers from the BBC joined conservation charity Dukes Meadows Trust this week to make a dramatic improvement to the Promenade Approach entrance to Dukes Meadows, Chiswick.
They helped to pick up litter, repair the trellis and weed along the rose-bed ready to plant four new rose bushes and two Honeysuckles

Wild Flower Garden

We were successful in raising the funding from a Breathing Spaces lottery Grant and with the support of Barratt Homes start to build a garden of wildflowers to replace the old disused paddling pools in Dukes Meadows, the flowers will be planted later this year to produce a blossom filled display when completed.
Barratt Homes delivered gravel extracted from the Thames so that the garden soil will be typical of a riverbank habitat.

Chiswick House Kitchen Garden is now looking after potted flowers planted by St Mary’s Primary School pupils. Over the next few months the flowers will be brought to Dukes Meadows along with new benches, a gate and a sign.

Commuity Garden

Volunteers from IBM joined the conservation charity Dukes Meadows Trust for a day’s work improving and maintaining the Community Garden and Water Play Area at Dukes Meadows, Chiswick, West London.  These facilities have become increasingly popular with young families over the holiday period and there is always a need for help to keep them looking good.

Dukes Meadows Trust has been awarded a £250,000 grant from the Big Lottery Fund to re-build the derelict play area at Dukes Meadows. The new playground is set to benefit children aged 8 to 15 of all abilities.
Presenting the cheque to a group of local children who helped design the new play area, Debbie Pippard Big Lottery Fund Head of Region for London said, "This Playful Ideas grant awarded to the Dukes Meadows Trust will make a real difference to the lives of children in Chiswick. An innovative approach to play will help to engage and build positive relationships with children and young people, not only benefiting them but also their local communities. Through sport and creative arts children will develop new talents, improve their social skills and build their confidence.”
The rundown playground at Duke’s Meadows will be replaced with a new play area designed by young people from Chiswick Community School and the Croft Centre for disabled children in Kew.

The New Adventure Playground construction began in September 2009
A new state of the art adventure playground is being constructed on Dukes Meadows Chiswick, adjacent to the water play area built by the Dukes Meadows Trust.
The playground has been designed to meet the needs of older children and is intended to encourage children of all abilities to mix. It has been designed to include many of the natural features of the park, including a dry water riverbed, which will provide a flexible play area that will change over seasons.
The project has been led by the Duke's Meadows Trust, which raised the £450,000 needed for the revamp. The trust also received funding from the Big Lottery Fund, the London Marathon Trust and Veolia Environmental Trust.
